Ronda Baldwin-Kennedy Named Ashford University's Outstanding Alum of the Month

SAN DIEGO, April 28, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Ronda Baldwin-Kennedy has been named Ashford University's Outstanding Alum of the Month for April 2017. While working on her law degree, Baldwin-Kennedy decided to simultaneously enroll in Ashford's bachelor of arts in political science and government program, to connect her legal knowledge with a solid understanding of the political process. Baldwin-Kennedy graduated from Ashford with a bachelor of arts in political science and government in 2013. Later that year, she also graduated from law school. After passing the California Bar exam in 2014, she started her own law practice.

While enrolled at Ashford, Baldwin-Kennedy found out she was pregnant with triplets. Ashford was able to offer Baldwin-Kennedy the flexibility to raise her children while still attending school. "I could not have achieved my academic goals without Ashford," said Baldwin-Kennedy.

Raised by her grandparents in a small town outside of Milwaukee, Wis., Baldwin-Kennedy grew up experiencing the struggles of diversity, eventually dropping out of school and later, earning her GED. While attending community college, Baldwin-Kennedy worked as a city building inspector for the city of Milwaukee. However, the opportunity turned bittersweet when Baldwin-Kennedy and her female co-workers were sexually harassed. This led Baldwin-Kennedy to file suit against the city of Milwaukee and the end result was in her favor.

The experience gave her a new respect and appreciation for the law and she decided to make a career change and become a lawyer. She also moved to California where she enrolled in an online law school while working at a law firm.  "My long-term goal is to have a Senate seat one day where I can actually make a difference," said Baldwin-Kennedy. "I think it's important for people who are in legislation to actually understand the law."

In addition to growing her law practice, Baldwin-Kennedy is teaching courses at the law school she attended. She has also returned to Ashford to add to her knowledge of public service, enrolling in the master of public administration degree program.
