Ashford University Donates $10K Grant to San Diego Unified School District's Children and Youth in Transition Program

SAN DIEGO, Sept. 4, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Ashford University presented a $10,000 check to Ibarra Elementary Principal Susie Sovereign for the San Diego Unified School District's (SDUSD's) Children and Youth in Transition program last week. The check was presented at an assembly at Ibarra Elementary School, where Ashford and SDUSD officials also handed out backpacks and school supply kits to students as part of the Ashford grant.

Children and Youth in Transition supports the continuity of education of students in transition, including students who are in foster care, experiencing homelessness, military dependents, and refugees.

"There are many students in San Diego starting this school year without the supplies they need to succeed," said Dr. Tony Farrell, Ashford University College of Education Executive Dean. "As longstanding supporters of the San Diego Unified School District and its students, we're honored to provide these students the tools they need to focus on learning."

Also present at the ceremony were SDUSD of Education Vice President Sharon Whitehurst-Payne, SDUSD Area Superintendent Monika Hazel, and SDUSD school police officers, who helped hand out backpacks and school supply kits.
