Ashford University's Dr. Alice Vestergaard Receives American Cancer Society Spirit Award

Dr. Alice Vestergaard, director of business development at Ashford University, has received the American Cancer Society Spirit Award.

Each year, the Spirit Award is presented to the organization or person who has been exceptional in their personal commitment to the cause and the mission. "They exemplify the best of our volunteers and community partners, those who rose above and beyond the day-to-day volunteering that serves others and advances the fight against cancer," said John Brannelly, corporate relations marketing director for the California Division of the American Cancer Society.

Dr. Vestergaard is an avid supporter of the American Cancer Society, first in Sacramento and for the past two years in San Diego. As a cancer survivor herself, she was the chair of the 2012 American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, the first year it exceeded its goal in its five year history. The annual event featured a Nobel Laureate as the keynote speaker, which is credited largely to her ingenious thinking.

In addition, Vestergaard served as the master of ceremonies and professor of Cancer 101. A proponent of education, she spearheaded the effort and invoked her professorial credentials to teach participants about cancer. Working to leave a strong legacy, she also recruited co-chairs for 2013 providing continuity and helping with the non-profit organization's long-range goals.

"Alice's enthusiasm and dedication is engaging and infectious," Brannelly concluded. "Our hope is that it inspires others to help the American Cancer Society and other important health and human service organizations."
