Posters on Display in Ashford University Art Gallery
Artist's reception planned for January 22, 2014 in Ashford art gallery

“Visual Noise: The Poster as a Disturbing Element in Society,” the next exhibit in Ashford University’s Cortona Art Gallery, will feature almost 400 hand-printed posters created by artist Amos Kennedy Jr.

The exhibit will be on display for two months – Nov. 22, 2013 through Jan. 22, 2014 – and there will be an artist’s reception on Wednesday, Jan. 22 from 2 to 4 p.m. in the gallery.

“For the past 63 years, I have been exploring relief printing,” Kennedy said. “This medium allows for a democratization of art.” After being introduced to letterpress printing, Kennedy studied at the University of Wisconsin in Madison and then established Kennedy Prints.

“I have learned that it is experience that defines the work I do. The more I experience, the more I understand what I am doing,” he noted.

The Cortona Art Gallery is located on the second floor of Ashford University’s St. Clare Hall at 400 North Bluff Boulevard in Clinton. The Gallery is named for Sister Cortona Phelan, OSF, former president of Mount St. Clare College (MSC) and former president of the Sisters of St. Francis. For many years, Sister Cortona influenced the quality of education at the college through her teaching of American history and her love of the arts. She also served as MSC Academy principal and as dean of students at the college.

The gallery is open to the public, free of charge, every weekday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. and for private showings by appointment. For further information, please call 563.242.4023.
