Ashford University donated $10,000 to help with the purchase of backpacks and school supplies for 466 students at Horton Elementary School. In coordination with the San Diego Unified School District’s (SDUSD) Office of Children and Youth in Transition (CYT), Ashford University Executive Dean of the College of Education Dr. Tony Farrell, Dr. Newton Miller, chair of Ashford’s department of education studies, and Ashford faculty member Dr. Jennifer Irwin, presented the check during Horton Elementary’s backpack distribution ceremony on Monday, Sept. 26.

“Ashford has been a long-standing supporter of the San Diego Unified School District and believes in enriching the lives of students through education,” said Dr. Farrell. “We are honored to have presented a generous grant to students of Horton Elementary.”

Also present during the backpack distribution ceremony were Horton Elementary Principal Staci Dent; Dr. Michael McQuary, SDUSD’s district C board president; Dr. Sharon Whitehurst-Payne, SDUSD’s district E board of trustee member; and a representative from the office of Councilmember Myrtle Cole.

CYT supports the continuity of education for students in transition, including students in foster care, students experiencing homelessness, students who are military dependents, and students who are refugees. The office serves more than 19,000 students each year, accounting for more than 14 percent of the total population of the entire San Diego Unified School District.
