Dr. William Woods, assistant professor in the College of Business and Professional Studies at Ashford University, received the Human Rights Commission Award presented by the Clinton Human Rights Commission on Monday, May 21.
“Dr. Woods was recognized for the passion and compassion that he has for the basic human rights of all people, especially the poor and under-represented people of Clinton County and across the world,” said Dr. Charlie Minnick, dean of the College of Business and Professional Studies. “I am very proud of Dr. Woods and his commitment to making our world a better place.”
The award is an “acknowledgement of persons/groups who embody the spirit of human rights.”
In a letter nominating Woods for the award, Minnick said he is a “role model for not only the students, staff, faculty and administration at Ashford University but for all citizens outside of the University in regards to promoting the spirit of human rights. He is deeply committed to making a positive difference in the world in which we work and live.”
A fulltime faculty member at Ashford, Woods frequently incorporates community service projects into his classes. During the past spring semester, his students collected more than 2,200 toys for the Victory Center and Benevolent Society. In 2011, his classes collected more than three tons of food for the Victory Center and, partnering with the Fishers of Men Ministries organization, recruited sponsors to provide food, clothing, shelter and education for 16 children in Kenya.
Sister Theresa Judge, another Ashford faculty member, noted in her nomination letter, “His philosophy is to design projects that can have maximum impact by involving many people working together. He is definitely a huge influence on his students, in and out of the classroom, to defend the human rights of the poor and marginalized people of Clinton and the entire world.”
