Lana Caywood, who describes herself as an “artist, educator, maker,” will showcase her artwork in an exhibition titled “Evolution” in Ashford University’s Cortona Art Gallery from Dec. 10 through Feb. 1. A reception for Caywood is planned for Monday, Jan. 28 from 2:30-4:30 p.m. in the gallery.

“’Evolution’ is an exhibition of my artwork and its progression over time. For me, the creative act is a journey,” Caywood said. “As I change and grow, as society and the political climate of our country changes, so does my work. ‘Evolution’ represents a span of more than 20 years of my creative journey.” 

 The exhibit includes detailed watercolors, a representational collage, abstract art of metaphor and art for social justice. 

Growing up in west central Missouri, Caywood’s life was strongly influenced by parents, grandparents and extended family who had survived the Great Depression and World War II. “Both of my grandmothers raised their families with the ‘make do or do without’ philosophy,” she said. “It was from them I learned the art of making – making gardens, sewing, knitting and homemaking. This is the reason I include ‘maker’ as a personal descriptor as well as artist and educator. I find the life of a maker more personally satisfying than the life of a consumer.” 

As an art educator, Caywood has taught students from preschool through the university level. “My art reflects my life,” she noted. “As my life, the society in which I live, my role in my family and profession change, my art will continue to evolve." 

The Cortona Art Gallery is located on the second floor of Ashford University’s Clare Hall at 400 North Bluff Boulevard in Clinton. The Gallery is named for Sister Cortona Phelan, OSF, former president of Mount St. Clare College (MSC) and former president of the Sisters of St. Francis. For many years, Sister Cortona influenced the quality of education at the college through her teaching of American history and her love of the arts. She also served as MSC Academy principal and as dean of students at the college.
