Volunteer teachers from Ashford University walked K-5 students at Valley Elementary in Poway, Calif., through a collection of business-themed lessons on May 22. Prepared by Junior Achievement (JA), the class materials are designed to expand elementary school children’s perception of how the world works for adults. The volunteers from Ashford acted as a conduit for this information, teaching from the perspective of real-world adults full of real-work information.
“Ashford University faculty and employees are always eager for the opportunity to volunteer with Junior Achievement and school children in San Diego,” said Dr. Andrew Shean, Ashford University’s executive dean. “The JA program does an excellent job of opening children’s eyes to the jobs that working adults do, and we’re glad to be a part of it.”
Junior Achievement’s “what adults do” learning experience is at the core of JA Teach Day. Children in the classroom are exposed to different facets of an adult’s workday experience, and JA lessons relate big-picture economic concepts and responsibilities to each student’s experience in their family, community, and country. More information on Junior Achievement of San Diego and Imperial Counties can be found on their website at jasandiego.org.
