Members of Ashford University’s Military and Veteran Student Taskforce presented on two topics at the Council of College and Military Educators (CCME) Professional Development Symposium held March 6-9, 2017 in Atlanta, Ga. Ashford was publically commended by military representatives for supporting military students and continuously working to improve its military policies and procedures.
During the first presentation, titled “Understanding Military Culture: Why Student Veterans Do Not Ask for Help,” an education service officer from the Air Force and a CCME symposium attendee praised Ashford’s staff for their support of military students. The second presentation, titled “Continuous Process Improvement: The Benefits of Creating an Internal Review Process,” highlighted the work Ashford has done to complete their Military Policies and Procedures Manual, a document which comprehensively outlines Ashford’s policies that impact and support its military student population. A representative from the Department of Defense Voluntary Education office applauded Ashford for its self-review process and continuous improvement methodology.
“As a project manager of many initiatives Ashford University implements, I witness firsthand the passion and dedication that Ashford has for our military and veteran students and their families,” said Torrey Herndon, policy and project manager at Ashford. “Being able to present at CCME, some of Ashford’s best practices, strategies, and innovations that support the military population was a tremendous opportunity. In addition, it was an honor to present to my colleagues – especially considering how well the presentation was received.”
Ashford is a proud member of CCME and a long-time participant and sponsor of the annual Professional Development Symposium hosted by CCME. CCME brings together representatives from the Department of Defense, Department of Veterans Affairs, all branches of the military, and educators to present best practices and encourage collaboration to better serve military and veteran students and their families.
