CLINTON, Iowa, Sept. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Ashford University is sponsoring a tennis clinic for Iowa's Special Olympics Organization (SOIA) on September 30( )from 6:00-7:30 p.m. The event is expected to attract nearly 40 athletes and about 150 student and athlete volunteers from Ashford.

"This is the second year Ashford University has sponsored a Special Olympics tennis clinic and we are particularly honored to be hosting such an event in the state of Iowa, home to our Ashford campus, this year," said David Vande Pol, senior director of academic partnerships for Ashford University. "As a former tennis professional, I founded this clinic in order to teach Special Olympics athletes the sport of tennis while ensuring that they have fun while learning."

Vande Pol states that the clinic will consist of a series of ten-minute drills where athletes will have the opportunity to learn the forehand, backhand, serve, service return, volley, lob, and more. The event will take place at the University of Iowa's Tennis Center, in Iowa City, where members of the University of Iowa tennis team will help instruct the athletes.

"We are thrilled to provide Special Olympics Iowa athletes with this opportunity in Iowa City," said SOIA vice president of games and competition, Pam Wagner. "Our partnership with the University of Iowa and with Ashford University has been tremendous. We have nearly 40 Special Olympics Iowa athletes from eastern Iowa who will participate in the September 30 tennis clinic."

Wagner also noted that the clinic at the University of Iowa campus is special for many of the athletes. "In addition to the sports training, it's especially meaningful to our athletes who have siblings at the university. It means so much for them to have a similar campus experience."
