Stacey Gregg, the face of major league baseball in San Diego, has been awarded an Ashford University full-tuition scholarship as a part of Project Working Mom.
To earn the scholarship, Gregg submitted an essay about her higher education aspirations. Her entry was selected out of more than 12,000 Ashford University applicants to the Project Working Mom scholarship program, developed by eLearners.com, a Web resource of EducationDynamics. Ashford University awarded 10 full-tuition scholarships.
Gregg, 40, who is the current guest services manager for the San Diego Padres, has held a full-time job since she was able to work. "I take great pride in my workplace accomplishments and am proud to have made an impact in each organization in which I have worked," Gregg said.
"When my daughter was two years old, her father was diagnosed with congestive heart failure. This changed all of our lives. Our dreams to be married, buy a home and raise our daughter were derailed and my personal dream to attend college had been delayed," she
said. In 2006, he passed away after his body rejected the heart he received through a transplant. "Since that time, I have been a single mother."
In her essay, Gregg wrote, "I have, on several occasions, wanted to return to school. Although it was my desire, the timing was never right. I wanted, and needed, to be available to my partner and to my daughter who has suffered such an emotional journey.
"I now see a maturity from her that shows me she can begin to work towards her dreams, and I can be a catalyst to her by demonstrating commitment to higher education at any age as I fulfill my own dreams accordingly."
She will be attending Ashford University to obtain a bachelor's degree in Organizational Management with a specialization in Business.
Ashford University is one of eight accredited online institutions donating more than 280 full-tuition scholarships worth nearly $5 million to the Project Working Mom campaign in 2010.
