Ashford University Sends Injured Troops Home for the Holidays

Ashford University has helped to send 10 injured members of the United States armed forces back to their hometowns to enjoy the holidays with their friends and families.

The university teamed up with the Warrior Foundation, a San Diego-based grassroots organization that supports service members who have been injured in the line of duty. The Warrior Foundation helps the injured service members, or “warriors” as they are known at the Foundation, in many different ways. Warrior Foundation programs include flying family members in to offer support to warriors while they rehabilitate, finding appropriate housing for disabled warriors, and helping warriors who have been medically discharged transition into civilian life. Each December, the Warrior Foundation looks for sponsors to help send the warriors home for the holidays, and Ashford University was eager to participate.

“These men and women have given so much,” said Jane McAuliffe, chief executive officer and president of Ashford University. “All of us at Ashford were happy to have this opportunity to give something back.”

The needs of servicemen and servicewomen are important to Ashford University, which boasts a large number of students who are active duty military. The structure of Ashford University allows students to attend classes online, making the university a popular choice for people in the military looking to continue their education.

“Our warriors are really excited about getting home for the holidays,” said Sandy Lehmkuhler, director of the Warrior Foundation. “All of the warriors have a spring in their step – even the ones who are on crutches.”
