Ashford University Sponsors San Diego's Freedom Station; Care Facility Now Open for U.S. Soldiers
Freedom Station established to offer recuperative and transitional support to injured veterans

On May 27, local politicians, members of the media and representatives from Ashford University joined together to celebrate the official opening of San Diego’s Freedom Station.

Designed as a healing and counseling resource for injured members of the U.S. military, Freedom Station (freedomstation.org) received substantial support from Ashford University in 2010. Ashford’s donation was used for building renovation and to ensure the facility and property were in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Donations to Freedom Station also assist injured veterans with job, trade and skills education, plus training to ease their return to civilian life. In honor of Ashford’s contribution, one of the facility’s cottages is named for the university.

“We’re very proud of Ashford University’s relationship with Freedom Station,” stated Doug Barling, Ashford University’s senior director of Military Relations. “Working to support the wellbeing of U.S. servicemen and women is one of the greatest duties any American can undertake, and we’re pleased to take part in this amazing endeavor.”

The ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on-site at the Freedom Station facility, a short distance from the San Diego Naval Hospital. Among those gathered for the Friday afternoon event were representatives of Rep. Duncan D. Hunter’s office. Following words from Sandy Lehmkuhler, president of Freedom Station, the dedication was delivered by USMC Col. Greg Martin, commanding officer of Wounded Warrior Battalion-West. The timing of the opening was noteworthy, as the ceremony marked the start of the Memorial Day weekend.
