Ashford University Begins Renovation of Science Building
$5.7 million project expected to be completed by start of fall semester

Work has begun on a $5.7 million renovation of Ashford University’s science building and is expected to be completed by the beginning of the fall 2012 semester in August.

“The science building was built in 1965 and this will be the first time that major improvements have been made to it,” said John Ballheim, vice president and campus director. “Like our other recent campus construction projects, this will be a complete renovation project. We are improving the science building to include state-of-the-art fume hoods, new lab benches with vacuum and natural gas fixtures and complete upgrades to the electrical and plumbing systems. The renovated space will feature central air conditioning and heating systems.”

Ballheim continued, “To give the renovated building a more modern look, we are leaving the corridors with an open ceiling and creating portholes to the classrooms. Within the classrooms we are installing new lighting, new drop ceilings and technology to enhance the student learning environment.”

All of the new facilities will be handicapped accessible, including the restrooms, laboratory work spaces, lab ventilation hoods and sinks.

The first phase of the 28,000 square foot project involves the building’s first floor and is underway. As soon as the spring semester ends, renovation of the second and third floors will begin. When the entire project is completed, there will be eight laboratories, five classrooms and 12 offices. The first floor will also feature a student study area.

Members of the University’s faculty were involved in developing the renovation plan. “It was important for us to get their input from the beginning because this is where they will be teaching our students and they are the experts on what is needed to give them a first class learning experience. Our biggest challenge is the timeline that’s been set,” Ballheim said. “We have only about three months to completely renovate two floors of the building.”
