Ashford University Presents Mile High Teachers Awards Ceremony
Denver's top educators honored at Sports Authority Field at Mile High

Ashford University sponsored this year’s Mile High Teachers Awards Ceremony, where 200 of Denver’s most inspiring and accomplished educators were honored for excellence. The event, which was co-hosted by the City and County of Denver, Denver Public Schools and the Denver Public Schools Foundation, shined the spotlight on outstanding teachers who have profoundly impacted Denver’s students.

“Ensuring that all of Denver’s students receive the best possible education is one of my administration’s top priorities,” said Denver mayor Michael B. Hancock. “Recognizing teachers who excel at motivating our students and preparing them for the future is essential to delivering a world-class city where everyone matters, and we greatly appreciate the generous support from Ashford University in recognizing Denver’s Mile High Teachers.”

Mitch Thomas, vice president of Ashford’s Denver Online Center, joined Hancock and Denver Public Schools superintendent Tom Boasberg on stage to present the awards at the May 2 event at Sports Authority Field at Mile High. The ceremony will be televised on Channel 8 multiple times during the month of May. Click here to view a list of the 2012 Mile High Teachers.

“Our commitment to education and youth extends beyond the walls of our University,” said Thomas. “It is important to recognize teachers who are going above and beyond to encourage learning and improve the lives of tomorrow’s leaders.”

Every Denver public school was invited to participate in the voluntary recognition program. Principals were encouraged to put together a small team of teachers, parents and students to select honorees based on the following criteria:

·         Creatively supporting student learning by establishing a stimulating learning environment and/or introducing projects and activities that enhance and bring curriculum to life.

·         Fostering the development of students and their intellectual, social, emotional or physical growth.

·         Demonstrating care and concern for the well-being of students and colleagues, thereby contributing to a positive school culture.

The Mile High Teachers Awards were launched in 2005 and have been an annual tradition in Denver ever since.
