Ashford University Helps Military Members Transition into Civilian Life
Career event designed for military service members, veterans and their families

Dozens of military members spent the day at Ashford University’s Sunroad building, receiving career services to help them return to civilian life. The event, dubbed “Operation Career Transition,” was specially designed for service members, veterans and their families in recognition of Military Appreciation Month. It provided attendees with tools, resources and workshops to help service members market themselves to employers.

“One of the biggest challenges veterans face in the return to civilian life is finding and obtaining employment. The services offered at Operation Career Transition are services we already offer Ashford’s existing students and alumni, so we repurposed the materials to fit the military audience,” said Margie Tlapa, associate vice president of corporate relations at Ashford University.

The event kicked off at 11 a.m. with a “Marketing You!” presentation. Participants then had the option of attending various workshops on resume writing, interviewing and social networking.

The all-day event also included a career fair where military members could learn more about employment opportunities and meet with recruiters from local companies, including Bridgepoint Education (NYSE: BPI) which owns Ashford University.

“This was a fantastic opportunity for our soldiers,” said Sandy Lehmkuhler, president of Freedom Station, an organization that helps wounded service members transition back to civilian life. “Ashford University provided a stellar team of people and organizations to help guide the service members through their first experience interviewing outside of the military. It has already made such a difference in the morale of our wounded warriors.”
