Ashford University Employees Team Up to Support Literacy in San Diego
Eighteen teams competed in the San Diego Council on Literacy's "The Bee"

To help raise awareness of literacy efforts in San Diego County, employees of Ashford University competed in the San Diego Council on Literacy’s “The Bee” on Thursday, Feb. 21 at the Hall of Champions in Balboa Park.

“Once again, San Diego residents acted upon their commitment to greater literacy in our community,” said Jose Cruz, chief executive officer of the San Diego Council on Literacy. “We are grateful to Ashford University for their generous support in every year of this event. Their employees seemed to have a great time too, and they certainly were competitive.”

The Bee, benefitting the San Diego Council on Literacy and its 26 affiliated literacy programs, is a spelling competition that consists of several teams of three competing against teams from other companies, schools, and non-profit organizations in San Diego County. The mission of the literacy council is to unify the community for greater literacy through leadership, advocacy, and resources. Each year, more than 170,000 individuals of all ages receive no-cost literacy services in San Diego.

Joining Ashford University as The Bee’s major sponsors were Bridgepoint Education, U.S. Bank, Petco, U-T San Diego, Kaiser Permanente, San Diego Community College District, Viejas, and many others.
