Ashford University Faculty Publish New Textbook to Help Students Master Online Education

Three Ashford University faculty members have published “The R-Model for Learning Online and Achieving Lifelong Goals,” a new textbook that will prepare students for the unique demands of online learning.

“Some of our educators saw a need that wasn’t being met by the textbooks that were currently available, so they made the decision to create their own,” said Beth Aguiar, Bridgepoint Education’s vice president of Learning Resources. “This textbook was written by our faculty specifically for our students.”

Collaborating on “The R-Model for Learning Online and Achieving Lifelong Goals” were Dr. Elizabeth Tice, Ashford University provost; Mary Alexander, Ashford University program director and, from Bridgepoint Education – Ashford’s parent company – senior vice president of Corporate Development; Dr. Wayne Clugston.

“The R-Model for Learning Online and Achieving Lifelong Goals” is based on eight principles for academic success: relevance, readiness, restructuring, reasoning, response, resources, relationships and reflection. Step by step, the textbook walks students through all facets of the online education experience, covering issues such as the motivation to pursue higher education, essential skills for the online learner, strategies for active learning, and effective use of the Internet.

“The R-Model for Learning Online and Achieving Lifelong Goals” will be a key component for students enrolled in Ashford University’s EXP 105 (Personal Dimensions of Education) course. The class was created specifically to introduce students to the online experience and help them succeed at Ashford University and in their lives after graduation.
