Four Ashford University Graduates Win Scholarships to Attend Commencement Ceremony

Ashford University is honoring online graduates from each of the University’s four colleges by sending them to the upcoming commencement ceremony to be held on October 22, 2011.

The recipients of the scholarships, which cover the student’s expenses for airfare, accommodations and car rental, are: Derek King, College of Education; Jessica Politte-Patterson, College of Health, Human Services and Science; Eva Liis Ramos, College of Liberal Arts; and Kyrica Veney, College of Business and Professional Studies.

“I’m extremely excited to receive the Ashford commencement scholarship,” King said. “For me, it’s a welcomed recognition of my hard work. I am thankful to Ashford for the rigorous education I received, for granting me the scholarship, and for the opportunity to represent our graduating class.”

Each graduate applied for the scholarship by submitting a short video explaining their career goals and why they chose Ashford University to achieve their educational goals. The videos also described the applicants’ educational journey at Ashford or their community leadership activities.

“This scholarship gives graduates the opportunity to attend the commencement ceremony when they otherwise may not have been able to because of travel costs,” Dr. Elizabeth Tice, president of Ashford University, said. “It’s our way of recognizing the hard work and dedication of high-achieving students.”

To be eligible to compete in the video contest, candidates had to: be in a recognized “Pending Grad” or “Graduate” status with Ashford University; have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.85; be in good standing with the University; and have demonstrated an excellent record of conduct.
