Students at Kimbrough Elementary School Start the Year with New School Supplies Thanks to Ashford University
Ashford's $10,000 donation resulted in new school supplies for 480 students

Representatives from Ashford University presented a check for $10,000 to the San Diego Unified School District’s Office of Children and Youth in Transition (CYT) on Monday. October 5. The donation was used to purchase 480 backpacks filled with essential school supplies that were donated to students at Kimbrough Elementary School in the Barrio Logan neighborhood of San Diego.

CYT selected Kimbrough Elementary as the recipient of the backpacks because it is considered a “high needs” school where 100% of the student population qualifies for the free breakfast and lunch program. Without the backpack donations, most of the students at the school would not have had many of the everyday supplies that children need.

“As an educational institution, Ashford University recognizes the importance of providing children with the essentials they need to be successful in school and beyond,” said Dr. Tony Farrell, executive dean of the College of Education at Ashford University, during the event to present the backpacks to the children of Kimbrough Elementary. “This event is a true reflection of that and it is a privilege for us to support it.”

Also speaking at the event were Martha Zapata from the office of San Diego City councilmember David Alvarez, Susan Kellett with the Office of Children and Youth in Transition, and Kimbrough Elementary principal Flavia Soria.

This marked the third consecutive year that Ashford University has supported the San Diego Unified School District’s program to provide school supplies to students in need.
