Twenty-two Ashford University students, staff and faculty members raced in red high heels Tuesday afternoon to raise money and awareness for the YWCA Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault Resource Center. All of the participants in the second annual “Heels for Her: Saints in Stilettos” were male.
Last week, students collected funds for the Clinton resource center using jars featuring staff and faculty member photos to gather donations. Carl Melrose, custom protection officer, was the big “winner” with his collection jar receiving $98.00. His reward was competing in the race in a white bunny suit. Faculty member Mike Burton’s $83.00 earned him second place and the right to wear a blond wig during his race. Altogether, Ashford students raised more than $250.00 for the resource center.
“The Saints in Stilettos event was created to give our Ashford student the opportunity to become more educated about our local resource center,” said Audra Adams, Ashford University’s manager of service learning. “It gave our students and faculty the chance to come together for such a worthwhile cause.”
