The artwork of “SLAPface,” a collaborative four-person group of artists whose work involves common interests in advertising, pop-culture and humor, will be on display in the Cortona Art Gallery at Ashford University from Feb. 11 through March 29. A reception for three of the artists is planned in the gallery on Thursday, March 28 from 2-4 p.m. During the reception, the artists will talk about the exhibit’s artwork. In addition, they will give a short presentation in Ashford’s drawing class.
The group’s exhibit, “25% closer to what the Pope would hang in the Vatican,” will feature mixed media pieces and two-dimensional work.
According to the group’s Facebook page, “SLAPface is a four person artist collective formed before our time. Each person completes the other, a strange phenomenon that was formed in grad school at the University of Cincinnati and realized near a dumpster in New York City in 2008.”
SLAPface consists of Geoff (Skip) Cullen, an abstract painter based in San Francisco, who teaches at The Art Institute of Sunnyvale, CA; Jacob Isenhour, a sculptor, painter and painting instructor at the University of Kentucky; Michael Willett, a painter and installation artist currently living in Champaign, IL and teaching in the art department at Eastern Illinois University, and Matt Wiseman, a Cincinnati based installation artist who co-manages Museum Gallery/Gallery Museum.
The Cortona Art Gallery is located on the second floor of Ashford University’s Clare Hall at 400 North Bluff Boulevard in Clinton. The Gallery is named for Sister Cortona Phelan, OSF, former president of Mount St. Clare College (MSC) and former president of the Sisters of St. Francis. For many years, Sister Cortona influenced the quality of education at the college through her teaching of American history and her love of the arts. She also served as MSC Academy principal and as dean of students at the college.
