Ashford University students have a new outlet to share their creative and critical writing skills, thanks to The Ashford Review, a publication created by Sigma Tau Delta, the University’s chapter of the international English honor society dedicated to promoting interest in literature and education.

“The journal came about in discussion with Sigma Tau Delta officers and advisors,” said Dr. Chase Pielak, the group’s advisor. “The officers wanted a venue to showcase their material and to demonstrate the high quality of work being produced at Ashford.”

In addition to being a showcase for student writing, The Ashford Review “also provides experience for English majors who are interested in publishing and editing, as students are involved at every stage of production – from making decisions about which texts are published to the final copyediting of the completed journal,” said Dr. Pielak.

In its 80 pages, the journal’s first volume featured 14 contributors. It was published at the end of the spring 2013 semester and contained creative prose and poetry, as well as two critical essays. Sigma members edited and wrote most of the contributions represented in the first volume, but several pieces came from the University at large.

“In the future, we'd like to see even more students submit work,” added Dr. Pielak. “Several students have already stepped up to claim ownership of the next issue and I'm excited to see where they take it. We also plan to institute a blind review process for the next issue so that, moving forward, students will receive helpful feedback on their work.”
