Colorado Lt. Gov. Garcia Joins Ashford University Volunteers to Read to Students
Power Lunch program sponsored by Mile High United Way and Denver Public Schools Foundation

Today, volunteers from Ashford University will be joined in the classroom by Lt. Gov. Joe Garcia as they read to students as part of the Power Lunch program. The reading and enrichment program is administered by the Mile High United Way and the Denver Public Schools Foundation.

The Power Lunch program teams up members of Denver’s business community with students at Denver public schools. Weekly Power Lunch meetings between the student and volunteer have been shown to improve student reading capabilities, student confidence, and the student’s affinity for reading. Each Power Lunch volunteer is paired with the same student for the entire school year.

“When the United Way and the Denver Public Schools Foundation approached us about Power Lunch, we didn’t hesitate to be the first to jump on board. Ashford University takes giving back to the community very seriously,” stated Mitch Thomas, vice president of Ashford’s Denver Online Center. “We’re especially pleased that the lieutenant governor can join us. Having a high-ranking state official involved helps raise awareness of the Power Lunch program, and the importance of volunteerism in Denver.”
